Founding member and co-managing partner, Miguel M. de la O has been a member of the Florida Bar since 1989, and is admitted to practice in all three of Florida’s Federal District Courts. Martindale-Hubbell awarded him an AV peer review rating, signifying that his peers consider his legal skills to be “very high to preeminent.” Florida Trends magazine has named him a “Legal Elite” in every year since 2004. The South Florida Business Journal named him “Best of the Bar” in 2005. Mr. de la O has been named a “Super Lawyer” by Law & Politics Magazine in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Mr. de la O has served as lead counsel in more than 30 jury trials and has a wide range of experience as a trial lawyer, including prosecuting and defending claims of copyright infringement, breach of contract, and torts including defamation and invasion of privacy; as well as civil rights cases ranging from discrimination against the disabled to sexual harassment.
Mr. de la O graduated, cum laude, from Florida State University with bachelor’s degrees in both Political Science and Criminology. Remaining at Florida State, he earned his law degree in 1989 with high honors. While in law school, Mr. de la O was invited to join the Law Review and served as an Articles and Notes editor. He also earned a position on the Moot Court team and was elected to the Order of the Barristers for his advocacy skills.
A Miami native, Mr. de la O returned to his community to work in the litigation department of Steel Hector & Davis. He subsequently joined Sonnett Sale & Kuehne, where he excelled as a criminal defense lawyer. In 1994, Mr. de la O joined with life-long friend, David Marko, to form de la O & Marko.
An active participant in the community, Mr. de la O was appointed by the Miami City Commission to the Nominating Committee for Miami’s first Civilian Investigative Panel, the Community Relations Board, the Charter Review Committee, and the Civil Service Board, which he has Chaired since 2004. The Florida Supreme Court appointed Mr. de la O to the Florida Board of Bar Examiners, where he served as member, Vice-Chair, and Chair. The Florida Bar appointed him to serve on a grievance committee, which he Chaired. He is on the Board of Directors of the Miami-Dade Urban Debate League, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Human Services Coalition, and continues to provide the organization with pro bono representation. He is a member of the Spellman-Hoeveler American Inn of Court, and has served on the Rules and Code of Evidence Committee of the Florida Bar., and on the Board of Directors of the Dade County Bar Association. Mr. de la O was twice named “Guardian Ad Litem of the Month” for the 11th Judicial Circuit. He was a member of the inaugural class of the Miami Fellows Initiative, an ambitious leadership training program, funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Mr. de la O actively raises funds for various community organizations, including Easter Seals, the Human Services Coalition, and the American Heart Association. In 2004, Mr. de la O was awarded a Union Planters’ Young Hispanic Leadership Award.
